Custom Homes
As you prepare to start your search for your new custom home you may come across words and phrases you haven’t come across frequently. Elevations may be one such word. While it may not be familiar, you’ve seen them already; they’re the exterior views of a home or building. Whether simple or ornate, they give you the first feel for a home.
When working with an architect or choosing your home design, you will see a series of elevations: front, side, rear, and possibly 3D. The front elevation typically gives you a feel for the overall style of the home, such as Craftsman, traditional, farmhouse, and more. This is where you’ll often have a combination of siding, stone, wood, and other materials and colors to best express that style.
Elevations aren’t just the front of the home, though that is typically the most detailed and decorative side of a home. Elevations refer to the exterior view of a building from all angles. Depending on how the home will be positioned on the lot, the side elevations may be visible, as well. Regardless, the side elevations give you a clearer view of the depth and height of the home. With the rear of the home, you’ll likely want an exterior that is attractive and functional, particularly if you plan to spend a lot of time in your backyard, whether playing with the children or entertaining family and friends. The rear elevation provides a clear understanding of exterior doors, the size and number of windows, and options for patios and porches.
